John Adams Middle School students are hardworking, dedicated, students who come to school every day in spite of the daily challenges we face. We live in a high poverty neighborhood, and each and every student receives a free breakfast and lunch from school. Our surrounding neighborhood is gang infested, and often violent, but that does not deter students from coming here to learn every day. Although LAUSD high school graduation rates are rising, we are not at 100% yet. Our School is 96.2 Hispanic and, as you can see below, the high school graduation rate, completing the four-year college entrance requirements, for Hispanic students in the United States (as of 2014) is only 22% without some sort of support like the AVID program. We, the JAMS College Dreamers, are AVID students, and we are already learning the skills we will need to graduate from high school and go on to a four-year college. We want to share our knowledge with our school and community so that EVERY student at JAMS will graduate from high school eligible to apply to any four-year college in the United States!
